Belay
To tend the rope, to “spot” or “catch” the climber in the event of a fall.
Belay Test
The following are the 6 requirements you will be tested on.
- Harness fitting
- Figure of 8 knot
- Figure of 8 follow through knot
- Double fishermen or double overhand backup knot
- Proper belaying technique
- Belay communications
If more than 2 of the 6 requirements are found to be incorrect, then it will be considered a class and proper charges will be applied.
You will need to test to either lead belay or lead. You can only test once per day for either test. If you fail after 3 attempts, you must complete a Lead Climbing class before you can test again. There is a $1.00 charge for each of these tests.
Top Rope
A style of climbing in which the climber is securely tied into a rope which then passes up, through an anchor at the top of the climb, and back down to the belayer at the bottom of the climb.
Bouldering
Short climbs close to the ground (12’ or lower) usually consisting of difficult dynamic movements.
Lead
Lead climbing is where the leading climber tows the rope along as they climb, occasionally clipping the rope into protection as they ascend the wall. This limits their fall to twice the distance of their last clip. This is a more advanced form of climbing and requires more skill, knowledge and nerve.
Information
For all those 14 or older, your first visit will require a belay certification. All Belay certifications (tests and classes) must be scheduled. If you pass the test, a $12.00 refund will be given in the gym. Our Belay certifications are held Wednesday through Sunday from opening to 2 hours before closing. Please be sure to schedule instead of showing up, so we can be sure everyone gets the proper attention they deserve. We do not belay for customers so bringing a buddy is a good idea but, not necessary. We usually have folks looking for a climbing partner. And our regulars are the best.
If you have previous belaying experience; you can opt for our belay test which is $3.00. (If more than 2 of the 6 procedures need to be taught, then it will be considered a class and proper charges will be applied.)
Or if you have no experience you will need to take the Belay Certification class. This is all the safety instruction; it usually takes about 20-30 minutes to teach 1 person (the more people in the class, the longer the class will take) and is a one-time charge of $15.00 per person. It isn’t difficult to belay but remember it is all about safety so the class could take longer (or shorter) depending on how quickly you learn. After the class, you will be tested, this test is included in the price of the class.
First time participants 14 or older will receive a free week membership (including rental equipment) After passing a belay certification class and purchasing a day pass.
If you are 13 and younger, you will need someone who is belay certified to belay for you. Preferably a legal guardian.
If you are a minor (17 or younger) you will need to have a parent or legal guardian fill out and sign a hard copy (paper) waiver for you. You will need to bring this signed paper waiver with you, we will need this for our files.
After certification, you are free to top rope and boulder as much as you wish.
Day passes are good ALL DAY.
